  • Texas ranks 3rd among all states in the number of military personnel serving in the GWOT.
  • During 2005-2006, approximately 62,000 veterans of the Global War on Terror have been discharged & returned to addresses in Texas.
  • Clinical evidence shows that up to 30% of returning veterans will experience behavioral health issues ranging from depression to anxiety to severe post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
  • Additionally, traumatic brain injury (TBI) is experienced by a higher percentage of Soldiers than any previous conflict.
  • Mild & undiagnosed TBI may be the signature challenge from the GWOT.
  • Mild TBI causes difficulties with attention, memory, mood regulation & impulse control, significantly affecting familial and occupational functions if untreated.
  • Compounding the challenges facing returning GWOT warriors, veterans of combat also experience significantly higher divorce rates, substance abuse, family violence, suicide, and vehicle accidents/deaths.
  • The trauma of combat creates a variety of primary and secondary consequences in Families, jobs and communities that occur over time. Left untreated, combat trauma has long been associated with tragic consequences - increased incarceration, unemployment, divorce, homelessness, substance abuse and Family violence.
